This camp was held in Xikou Town, Longyou County, Quzhou City, Zhejiang Province, where more than 20 rural teachers and headmasters from all over Zhejiang Province gathered. I was mainly responsible for the theatre workshop on the theme of "Educator's Vitality".
From the time I received this proposition, I have been thinking about what is the life force of an educator. Although "teachers are the engineers of human souls" is deeply rooted in people's minds, and teaching has always been an honourable and respected profession, the reality is that many teachers' mental state, mental health and physical functions are not satisfactory. But the reality is that many teachers' mental state, mental health, physical function are not ideal, too busy and too tired to work, teaching outside of the many tasks, psychological pressure overload ...... There are even some teachers do not love the cause of education, just as a job to make money to make ends meet, not close to the children do not love, the result is their own pain, but also affect the education of children. It also affects the education of children. So how to change these problems, how to let teachers have a healthy mind and strong body, how to let teachers find meaning and value in their seemingly "repetitive" daily work, this is what I think is the key to make educators have vitality.
I have designed quite a challenging programme content for this workshop, which is a challenge for myself, and the final result is unknown to me, and needs to be co-created by me and the teachers together in the process. Based on the absurdist play "Waiting for Godot" and using educational theatre as a methodology, the workshop took teachers with no theatre experience through a series of interesting games and exercises in one day, to perceive their own body and space, and to establish a tacit understanding with their partners. The rings are interlocked and layered, ultimately leading to group co-creation and linking with each other. I have especially increased the physical part, so that the teachers can move their bodies, mobilise their minds and bodies, and lay a good foundation for theatre creation.
The workshop consisted of four panels: Looking Inward at the Self, Time and Space, Repetition and Meaning, and Waiting and Hoping. After her experience, Anke from Smin Primary School summarised the four panels in this way:
Inner Self - physicality, focus and opening up the self
Time and Space - focusing on the group and building group understanding
Repetition and Meaning - Since repetition is boring, there must be a meaning to it.
Waiting and hope - the power of co-creation, searching for hope, searching for "what to wait for", perfecting the script together, rehearsing together, who is Godot? There is no standard answer, just as there is no standard answer in life.
The Inner Self focuses on the gradual activation and development of teachers' physical expression, concentration, observation, etc. through theatre games, especially to enable them to relax. Most adults, including teachers, are very tense, and if this is the case, it is easy to transfer this tension to the students. Just as in theatre, one needs to be able to relax before one can explode, one needs to be able to relax before one can be enthusiastic in life.
The Time and Space uses group games and activities to guide the teachers to feel the existence and change of space, and at the same time to build up the tacit understanding and connection of the group. The day before the workshop, we visited the Mud Art Museum in Xikou Town, where many photographs of people were on display, so I took some of them and brought them to the workshop as practice material for the improvisation part. Teachers went out into the space on their own, turned over the photographs that were fastened to the floor and tried to figure out the characters in the photographs, and then made themselves into the characters and improvised interactions and plot developments with the other characters in the space.
The Repetition and Meaning had a pre-task, where the teachers went to a small town the night before, found an object and designed a series of repetitions using that object, based on the theme of repetition. Teachers brought the object to the workshop and presented the repetitions they had designed, and together we decided if the repetitions were OK. Following this, I asked the group two questions: Does the repetition have meaning? How can we make repetition meaningful? The starting point for designing this board was that teachers usually have a lot of repetitive tasks, such as lecturing and correcting homework. Also, waiting often consists of repetitive actions.
Next comes the most important, Waiting and Hope. In this panel, teachers write down on paper what they are waiting for and think about what is the relationship between waiting and hope? When faced with uncertainty or even despair, do you still wait? Afterwards, the teachers were divided into four groups, and each group discussed and identified an object of waiting, set up different roles, created dialogues about waiting, and used the body as the main form of expression to create a theatre piece based on the theme of "waiting".
At this point, with two hours to go before the evening performance, the teachers began discussions and preparations in their groups. One thing that the teachers observed was that I did not assign group leaders or directors to each group. This is what I usually do in my drama classes at school, and of course the creative process would be faster if there was a leader or director, but I hope that in a leaderless group, teachers can learn to work together as a team, especially in dealing with the problems that the team encounters.
Each group encountered some problems, which I discussed with the teachers, giving some suggestions while respecting their ideas and designs. The creation of the theatre piece happened naturally in this process, and by the evening, everything was in place.
Soon, nearly five o'clock, the teachers began to pack up their props and get ready to go. It was raining outside at the moment, but we were still confident that the big tree at the old ferry crossing would give the teachers an unusual energy. On the first day in town, I saw the big tree at the old ferry at Xikou and decided to set the final stage there. With the tree looming overhead and the river flowing by, what could be a better stage. So the original plan went ahead.
The weather was kind, and as we started to prepare under the big tree, the rain surprisingly stopped. During the lunch break, the teachers went to the town and put up posters inviting the local townspeople to come and see our performance. So when the performance started, besides our teachers, there were also some townspeople who came to watch. The theatre just happened naturally in the town, and this was the best memory of the trip to Xikou Town.
Perhaps nature gave the teachers a different kind of energy, and the teachers of the four theatre groups stood on the stage under the big tree and showed a completely different look than they did indoors. Everyone was so confident and natural. Although they had no previous theatre experience, they were theatre actors at this moment.
The performance was quite successful, we created a theatre piece of our own in just one day, Waiting for Godot in Creektown, interpreting four stories about waiting, and the teachers accomplished what otherwise seemed impossible.
At the review, the teachers gave their feelings.
"The whole day was happy, healing, and it was great to experience a different life."
"Experiencing a different life, theatre is like life, life is like theatre. Our theatre comes from our life. Connecting to our own reality, what are we waiting for in this play?"
"Having a sense of immersion, being able to understand what the characters are feeling, the ambivalence between staying here and leaving. The hardest thing was the tacit understanding in the play, the tacit understanding of the co-operation between the companions, not being sure what you are going to play until the last moment."
"The greatest feeling is co-creation."
"Timing! Timing - it wasn't raining at the time of the performance, location - the theme of the children left behind, and harmony - being on the same frequency and feeling like I was on a team."
"Being on the same frequency as everyone else while having your own personality and expressing something unique to you as much as possible in the group."
"Not taking it seriously in rehearsals, but when occupying the stage you have to take it seriously, make sure you push yourself back a bit, same with teaching in general."
"Breaking through a handful of times, did e for i today and broke through. Usually it's easy to watch kids animals crawl, today I found it challenging."
"Was going to play a tree and be there silently watching others. But the process kept changing and being proactive and active in it was the biggest reward."
"Focusing on the moment, focusing on creating in a very short period of time, feeling yourself, feeling the space, your partner. Not having to think about what you're going to do tomorrow and the day after."
"More healing within, being able to empathise with others through theatre."
"Being touched by everyone, everyone is very serious."
"Compact and fulfilling, challenging. The collision of partners, the constant speculation on every detail, the constant speculation on one person presenting an idea and then having it rejected when we were all unsure. Training like never before, a whole new feeling."
"When I was preparing yesterday, I was worried that waiting for Godot would be a bit difficult, and after today's performance I will think about the absurdity of life itself. When a group of people get together like this, they can go on to create a lot of different things, I didn't even think it was possible to go on to create a theatre before, and this has boosted my confidence in what I'm doing. Today's theme is strength, and that strength is what the process has given me from everyone."
"I had no experience of performing on stage before today, there is a big difference between the two, before it was more about imitation, focusing on whether the movement was jumping in place or not, imitating like it, today was more about creating, before it was about completion, today it was about the process. Being able to find commonalities in so many different things, marvelling at how many ideas people have, the process is a joy."
"Climbing in front of everyone is what it feels like to let go."
"A lot of the parts were challenging myself in ways I never would have done before. Really appreciated the charm and fun of creating, enjoyed it, had fun, and like the teacher just said, found myself. I'm looking forward to going and integrating into a team to experience an activity like this in the future."
"It feels very happy, usually at school I don't have such a cheeky laugh, I can let it out, everyone is so serious, it's great to be here with everyone."
"I think it's too hard, today was a big challenge for me, had to grind it out many times before I was able to break out, was a big break out of my comfort zone, thanks to the support of my mates."
"So want to go on stage to act, very enjoy the feeling of being in it, in a word, a day is practising how to meet the process of surprise in the unknown and uncertain, a lot of envisioning outside."
"Today Mr Miu gave everyone challenging tasks, when slowly collecting the uneasiness, everyone gained something on their own and felt everyone was fantastic. Was attracted infected and blown away."
"Saw the relationship building and power that comes from being physical and was very moved to see it more real today."
"Particularly wonderful! Everyone is touching each other in different ways, physically, verbally, co-creatively, and today was a very full day of joy to see how much is growing."
In fact, today was a lot of challenges for myself. At the beginning, I wasn't sure what the process and outcome would be, and during the process of co-creating together we didn't know what would happen. The good thing about being a theatre teacher is that you can gain a lot from it, which is the happiness of a theatre teacher.
This workshop is not for the teachers' teaching, but only for their own immersion and growth. Only when the teachers themselves are happy and healthy can they bring the best education to the children.

Kezi (Zhoujan Primary School):
The Drama Workshop One Day Camp has come to a successful conclusion! One day of conceptualising, writing, rehearsing and finally producing a play was a frantic trial and error on the edge of our comfort zones! During the rehearsal process, we kept on generating new inspirations and ideas with our fourD partners, and also encountered major bottlenecks in terms of plotting and meaning setting. However, we continued to brainstorm and work hard to overcome them. In the end, we were able to produce a more complete piece of work than I could have imagined in the morning! My goal in coming to this training has always been clear: I wanted to break through my own limitations and look at aesthetic education from a different perspective. After today's activity, I feel that half of it has been achieved.
Zhang Jing (Zhipu):
A full day of theatre workshop, through theatre games and exercises everyone looked inward at themselves, experienced body strength and attention, perceived space and time, gradually relaxed their bodies and opened their minds, explored repetition and meaning, waiting and hope in their creations, and found questions of inner searching and interpreted them. Finally, the teachers performed their own theatre piece "Waiting for Godot in Xikou Town" in the evening. Teacher Mu Bin said that breaking the record of leading the completion of the play in just one day was due to the openness, seriousness and creativity of the group, which allowed him to challenge himself as well.
Huang Qiaoping (Simin Primary School):
Today was a day of [Waiting for Godot], from opening ourselves up in the morning, to co-creation of theatre in the afternoon, to the exhibition in the ferry in the evening, it was really a new kind of self-breakthrough! As I said during the review, acting is easy to watch, but it's really hard to wait until you're on it! Luckily, with Mr Miu's guidance and the very helpful Four D's, we successfully completed the performance [celebration] Theatre is really a wonderful way of education, looking forward to tomorrow ......
Little Hum (Zhoujan Primary School):
From attending the Tongpu Primary School Drama Education Workshop in December 2023 to the Drama Education shadowing in Chengdu's Tianfu 7 Middle School in April 2024, I made up for it today by not experiencing the production of a play first hand, if there was any regret at all, from my first acquaintance with educational theatre to seeing the connections to life in theatre! It was very enjoyable!

Each member of the team is a treasure hunter, capturing possibilities as they emerge.
In one day, we've done something "great". "The greatness lies in the fact that it couldn't be planned, and the final appearance was beyond everyone's expectation, made possible by "accident" and "improvisation"... -Waiting for Godot at the Creek Crossing" [Choice].
