Registration open for theatre performances of “Icarus’ Wings” and “The River Taming Boy” 《
After five years of development, Tianfu No. 7 High School has not only pioneered the introduction of compulsory drama classes—a first in the country—but has also established high-calibre student theatre groups based on a system of mutual selection. Currently, the primary section of Tianfu No. 7 High School is home to the Zhiren Theatre Group and Tallowtree Theatre Group, whilst the secondary section boasts the Saddle Theatre Group and Inkwell Theatre Group. These groups have created over ten original plays, including Jingwei Fills the Sea, Yu the Great Tames the Floods and The Spark, etc., and have been shortlisted for festivals such as the Daliangshan Theatre Festival and the International Youth Festival of Ancient Greek Drama.
It is worth noting that the works of Tianfu No. 7 High School’s student theatre groups are co-created by teachers and pupils. Moving away from the traditional approach of having students memorise and imitate existing scripts, the school emphasises the incorporation of pupils’ own life experiences into the creative process, as well as the expression of their own thoughts and reflections through theatrical works.
How can children participate in theatrical creation? How can they convey genuine emotions in their performances? How can children use theatrical performances to make their voices heard by society? We invite you to join us on 14 June at ARCH SPACE, at the Top Square of Luxe Town in Chengdu, for two theatrical performances presented by the Tianfu No. 7 High School Student Theatre Groups. Come and discuss the value of theatre and drama for children face-to-face with the school’s teachers and students.
As part of the 5th Zhiren Theatre Festival of Tianfu No. 7 High School, the school will collaborate with LOOKLIVE to present a special performance at ARCH SPACE.

Icarus’ Wings reimagines the classic Greek myth, linking it to the struggles and psychological needs of contemporary children as they grow up. The story begins with Daedalus fleeing to Crete with his son Icarus after having committed a crime in Athens. There, he built the Labyrinth for King Minos, only to find himself in fresh trouble for aiding the Athenian prince Theseus in slaying the Minotaur. The chorus in the play not only provides narration and sets the mood, but also profoundly reveals the characters’ inner turmoil regarding the fierce conflict between law, morality and desire. To escape trial once again, Daedalus made wings from feathers and wax, and warned his son to fly at a moderate height. However, the young Icarus, captivated by a longing for freedom and the sun, disregarded his father’s warning. Tired of perpetually following in his father’s footsteps, he yearned to break the rules of adulthood and, driven by intense curiosity, sought to gaze upon the sun at close quarters. Ultimately, his wings melted, and Icarus plunged into the sea. The play concludes with a dialectical reflection on courage, recklessness and the value of life, illustrating the heavy price humanity must pay when pursuing its dreams. This is not merely an ancient Greek tragedy, but a mirror reflecting our present times: it poses a question to today’s parents and children—when faced with growing up, is a child’s defiance of parental teachings in pursuit of absolute freedom merely blind recklessness, or is it the courage of having truly found one’s own identity?

Every July, as the flood season approaches on the River of Wrath, the Li tribe must follow an ancient tradition: they select one person by divine decree to face the River of Wrath alone. This year, the divine decree fell upon Aya, a twelve-year-old boy who could not speak and was often overlooked by his tribe. The tribe was filled with dread, and mockery ran rampant. No one paid any heed to this child who could not even stand upright, and no one believed he could tame the River of Wrath, which had swallowed countless lives. Aya had no war dance, no lute, no rope, nor any extraordinary trick to subdue the monster. The only thing he knew how to do was ‘listen’. As he walked alone towards the raging river, everyone assumed he was doomed. Yet it was this silent boy who heard the secret the River of Wrath had never uttered in a thousand years.
